Health checks are designed to look for risk factors or early signs of diseases such as:

• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Kidney disease
• Stroke

If you are 65 or over, you will also be told about the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for.

At the NHS Health check, you will be asked a few simple questions by a Healthcare professional, either a Nurse or a Healthcare Assisistant who we will help you find ways to lower your risks.

We will ask your

• Age/gender and ethnicity.
• Medical History/Family History of disease
• Lifestyle questions including your diet, weight, physical activity, alcohol and whether you smoke.

We will check your

• Blood Pressure using a cuff fitted over your upper arm
• Waist measurement using a tape measure
• Your height.

A small sample of blood will be taken from your finger during the appointment to check your cholesterol.

You will be given a cardiovascular disease risk score which is an estimate of how likely you are to get heart disease or have a stroke over the next 10 years. You will also find out your possible risk of developing kidney disease and diabetes. The higher your score the more likely you are to develop one of these illnesses.

Depending on your score you will be given advise about how to reduce your risk with lifestyle changes .You may be offered and referred on to outside services such as stop smoking/physical activity to help you make changes.

If you are 65 you also will be told the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for.

If your score is in the higher range, you may be prescribed statin medication to help reduce your cholesterol. You may be asked to come back to have a high blood pressure re checked or diabetes or to check that your Kidneys are healthy.

All information and results of your NHS Health check will be recorded in your confidential medical records which can be accessed by your GP.
